Alison Chinn - Pet Portrait and Wildlife Artist

It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty, the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.
— David Attenborough

For over 10,000 years, Britain has been home to Red Squirrels.

It’s rare now to see a russet furry fellow climbing the trees. There are only about 140,000 left, sighted mostly in northern England, Scotland and Wales. Grey squirrels were introduced to England from North America and sadly is a huge factor in the decline of our native species, as greys carry Squirrelpox and this is fatal to our red friends.

Red squirrels don’t hibernate, either - so they rely on their hard work burying their food in the ground throughout the year. They spend much of their time in tree canopies, and as our beloved woodlands are slowly decreasing, it is so disheartening that their natural habitat is being ripped away.

I made the decision to offer my skills to help support conservation efforts for our planet. This is incredibly important to me, and to the rest of us. 10% of the original portrait proceeds will go towards Rewilding Europe.

My original, hand-drawn, coloured-pencil portrait of a red squirrel; Regis. Characterfully named by a wonderful client after selling her story about a squirrel that made a nest in her back garden!

    Artwork Dimensions: 6 x 6 Inches

Fly Agaric, a fairy-tale mushroom known for it’s bright red surface and white spots. Incredibly poisonous and hallucinogenic to us, this fungus is edible for some woodland wildlife including red squirrels - a good tasty snack for Regis!

  • Portrait of White Pumpkins - 4 x 4 inches

    Available for Sale

    Date of Completion: 10.04.2023

    Artwork Dimensions: 4 x 4 Inches

Pumpkins come in all different colours, the rarest being blue! White pumpkins have become popular recently in fall decor for ornamental displays, but not many farmers grow them. Pumpkins can be a great tasty snack for foxes, squirrels, badgers and birds - but if your garden is host to a family of hedgehogs, please don’t leave them out as too much of this big vegetable can be fatal to our spiny friends!

  • Portrait of Maple Leaves - 4 x 4 inches

    Available for Sale

    Date of Completion: 10.04.2023

    Artwork Dimensions: 4 x 4 Inches

Deep orange and browns are trademark autumnal colours and falling leaves are sure-signs the seasons are changing. Many wildlife species rely on these fallen leaves for cover and insulation during the colder months. Pollinators and insects benefit from these habitats so leaving dead habitats is really beneficial for those butterflies and bees!

    750,000.

That’s how many plains zebras we have left in our wild. Maybe that seems like a lot. Maybe they’re not as threatened as some other of our planet’s species. But their population has decreased by 24% since 2002, according to IUCN. Considering their gestation length is 10 years, that’s only within 2 generations.

If we were talking about the human race, that’s a loss of 1.8 billion people in just under 20 years.
